What is BIOSIRE?

BIOSIRE will establish a shift towards bio-diesel and electric propulsion for fleets, ships and other special vehicles in important tourist areas in Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia and Austria.
Local actions are directed at market transformation and changing the behaviour of fleet operators, tourists and residents, farmers and potential suppliers of used cooking oils. These actions cover the full production and distribution chain: fuel supply, distribution network, fleet operators and final users. More than 250 fleet operators will participate in project events and the number of hotels and restaurants supplying used cooking oils will increase by 944.
By the end of the project, over 20.282.000 litres of biodiesel will have substituted conventional diesel consumption, leading to primary energy savings of 650.000.000MJ and a reduction of CO2 emissions of 36.000.000 kg. An integrated evaluation will assess the impacts of the demonstrators.
Recommendations for new areas will be formulated, in addition to a variety of transferability activities that will directly involve new tourist regions in project actions and stimulate their launching of new programmes.

Specific Objectives

Establish a shift towards bio-diesel and electric propulsion implemented in fleets, ships and other transport modes using special vehicles in important European tourist areas in Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia and Austria.
Higher awareness among fleet operators about the benefits of using biodiesel and electric propulsion in special vehicles
Establish a sustainable production process and favourable legal and market conditions for biodiesel
Actively transferring the BIOSIRE technical information, tools, practical experiences, evaluation outcomes and recommendations to a further group of selected tourist areas in Europe

Description of the work

In BIOSIRE, the authorities of the tourist areas in Mallorca, La Rochelle, Austrian Regions, Crete, Veneto, and Croatian regions
implement actions directed at market transformation and changing the behaviour for: o fleet operators, tourists and residents, farmers and potential suppliers of used cooking oils, in order to obtain o successful deployment of biodiesel and electric propulsion applications in the tourism sector, with a focus on special vehicles.

The BIOSIRE demonstration actions cover the entire production and distribution chain: fuel supply, distribution network, fleet operators and final users. The take-up of knowledge from previous and running projects will aid the development of tools and guidelines which respond to the application of biodiesel and electric propulsion in special vehicles and to the specific requirements of the tourism industry. An integrated assessment will be made to be able to compare the demonstration impacts and formulate recommendations for other tourist regions. BIOSIRE is structurally organizing transfer of BIOSIRE results through cross-initiative co-operation, transfer to tourist regions in Poland and Croatia, as well as the establishment of a wider transfer network of European tourist regions. Through proactive and multiple channel dissemination, a wider target group of tourist areas will be reached.
